The Center for Governance and Intra-Africa Trade Studies (CGIATS) is a leading research and policy institute dedicated to fostering sustainable development and economic integration across the African continent. We provide rigorous analysis, evidence-based policy recommendations, and capacity-building programs to empower governments, businesses, and civil society organizations to navigate the complexities of governance and intra-African trade. CGIATS is committed to promoting inclusive growth, indigenous governance, and the realization of the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) objectives. Mission

Africa Speaks: Centre for Governance and Intra-Africa Trade Studies is a centre of distinction that conducts high-quality research on governance, intra-African trade, and related subjects. The centre brings together African scholars of the highest calibre to engage in dialogue and contribute to the rigorous production and dissemination of knowledge based on indigenous knowledge systems and international practice.

Vision

The centre seeks to trans-disciplinary knowledge and theory production research cooperation and policy engagement, which benefit the Africa Union RECs and Member States. The centre promotes critical dialogue in pursuit of African unification and intra-African trade. Similarly, the institution collaborates in research and instruction with African universities. The ultimate undertaking is to establish people centre sustainable development, harmony and tranquillity among African people and beyond. Â

CGIATS Timeline - Two Sides

2024–2034

Strategic Implementation Phase

Focus on policy implementation, continent-wide awareness campaigns, and institutional capacity-building initiatives. Scaling partnerships across all AU member states.

2023

Partnerships & Advocacy

Launched academic partnership with University of Johannesburg. Initiated Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) advocacy program with key stakeholders.

2014–2018

Continental Engagement

Served on the African Union ECOSOC, advising on governance frameworks and intra-Africa trade policies. Conducted 12 pan-African research initiatives.

2012

Foundation

Established under Africa Speaks initiative to address governance challenges and trade barriers. Conducted inaugural Pan-African Governance Symposium.
